Sawane Haleeb (Palestinian Dessert)

Postby nads » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:12 am

Recipe Title: SAWANE HALEEB, PALESTINIAN DESSERT

Recipe Serves: makes two large trays

Ingredients:
4 cups of flour
3 cups milk powder
1 cup dessicated coconut
pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp instant yeast
enough warm water to make runny batter
vegetable oil

Method:
whisk together the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Then whisk in the warm water until you have a runny batter.

leave to rest few hours till its good and bubbly (see pic)
pour some vegetable oil in the base of two large pans (just enough to smear the bottoms) and place in the oven to preheat (maximum heat at this stage)

once oil is very, very hot, remove from the oven, pour in your batter and return to oven to bake at moderate heat.

this should take bout thirty minutes but keep an eye on it, once its browned on top its done.

serve with attir (syrup): bring to the boil: 2 cups sugar, 1 cup of water, squeeze of lemon, few drops rosewater/cinnamon etc (this is jus to flavour), let simmer few minutes and pour over the sliced sawane haleeb.

Recipe Notes: *just make sure that either the syrup or the baked sweet is hot, one or the other so you don't get a doughy desert.

hope you enjoy :D

Nads, this looks GOOD!!!! I am in! I am sure the kids would love it too!

Maybe we should mention that the title 'Sawane Haleeb' literally means 'Milk Trays'! YUM! Sounds divine!

Did you pick up the recipe when last you were in Lebanon? Eventhough you say it is a Palestinian desert, is your Cousin who gave you the recipe of a Palestinian heritage? My mother is half Palestinian.

jax did you mean the whole desert or jus the batter? with the batter you can prepare few hours in advance which is even better. you can have it baked and cooled early on the day you want it, and just heat up the syrup wen you serve it. hope this helps :D

thanks sam, I forgot to mention the meaning, and I think its an excellent one for the kids, all that milk :D

hope you make it soon, i think you'll really like it. you're right i did pick it up on my recent trip, as well as heaps of other mad recipes i can't wait to try. I was so happy to find an authentic old palestinian recipe, i love the history behind food too, find it really intersting. I'm palestinian too originally, the whole family is though, most of them were born in lebanon and are living there.

let us know how you go with the desert :D
